Children's clothing store Rugged Bear to close

A popular children’s clothing store in the Pittsford Plaza is closing.

Rugged Bear, which has been in Pittsford for 10 years selling clothing items for children aged newborn to adolescent, has begun liquidation sales, according to manager Carol Finley. The closing is part of a shutdown of the Boston-based Rugged Bear chain, which has 29 stores in New England, New York and New Jersey.

“People are very sad,” Finley said of customer reaction to the closing, which will occur, the company said in a statement, when all the merchandise is sold.

“The community has been very supportive over the years,” Finley said. “I’ve been with the company 16 years and remember holding many of my customers’ babies who are now grown up.

“Now I’ll be out looking for a job.”

The local Rugged Bear store was located in Brighton for 12 years before moving to Pittsford.

According to a company statement, all Rugged Bear stores will honor gift cards, merchandise credits and membership program benefits throughout the liquidation sale. All sales were final as of March 4, though items bought before that date may be eligible for returns.
